JL Patisserie Has the Pastries You Dream About

JL Patisserie
It’s hard to say when it happened, but sometime in my approach to 40 I started to not feel so great after eating pastries. Donuts happened a decade before—probably because of the sugar—but something started not clicking when eating pastries. These days, I choose my battles wisely. Most shops, I just nod politely and move on to something with more protein, but at JL I just can’t fight it. The croissants are too good. They’re perfectly crispy on the outside, perfectly airy in the middle, and have that perfect amount of butter to let you know you’re alive. I do tend to feel better if I pair a croissant with a quiche, so I think that’s the move here. Pick a croissant—plain, or in any of their more interesting configurations—and a slice of quiche. And a macchiato. You’re going to need some caffeine to keep your heart pumping.

What to Get
When perusing the options at this Phoenix and Scottsdale bakery, decadent chocolate brownies or gooey Gruyère cheese croissants may catch your eye first. But don't look past the Pain Aux Raisins. The giant pastry looks similar to a cinnamon roll, except instead of bready, risen dough, the roll is made of flakey croissant pastry.

On a quiet Saturday morning at JL Patisserie in Phoenix, masked customers breeze by to pick up pastries and coffee. Most know what they want. Some even make recommendations to newcomers. On his way out, a man with a French accent clutching a baguette tells a couple in line: “You won’t find a better baguette than this.”

Phoenix New Times: Your Favorite New Hidden French Cafe in Uptown Phoenix
As you enjoy your book, coffee, and croissant, you may spot your neighbor walking in. He may sit and join you — just as Leurquin had imagined when she opened this space. While you catch up, you overhear someone at a socially distanced table exclaim to his wife, “This is the flakiest croissant I’ve ever tasted.”
