Matt’s Big Breakfast is Better Than the Other Breakfast Spots
5.5 Yumpoints | Tied for #36 in Phoenix | Tied for #12 in Downtown | Tied for #10 in the East Valley | Tied for #9 in Scottsdale
It started with my first bite of the Chop and Chick, back when Matt’s was a tiny restaurant in downtown Phoenix you had to wait an hour to eat at. The meat dipped into the runny eggs and the home fries on the side to soak up the rest. So. Good. The side of sourdough bread just covered in butter with that little ramekin of what looks like homemade strawberry jam. Also amazing. These days, I nearly always get the special scramble because variety is spice or something. It’s always delicious, but it’s a little extra something when they do it with jalapeños, chorizo, and that giant pull-apart tortilla. It’s just the best.
Where: Downtown (Roosevelt District), East Phoenix (the Biltmore), Scottsdale (south of Kierland), Glendale, East Valley (Agritopia)
Website: mattsbigbreakfast.com
Reservations: Nope
Tip: If the special scramble (Fri/Sat) comes with a tortilla, you have to get it. It’s a house rule.

Phoenix New Times: The Top 100 Restaurants
Never again will we see the days of the old Matt's Big Breakfast, with the wraparound line of hungry breakfasters at the original 800-square-foot red brick building at First and McKinley streets. The breakfast was simply too good, and the deserved accolades sent Matt's to a bigger location a block north, then on to additional Valley locations. But the menu has stayed true.

AZ Central: 100 essential restaurants in metro Phoenix: The best places to dine in 2024
Many good mornings in Phoenix start at Matt’s Big Breakfast. I know from personal experience that I have far more energy to get through the day whenever I start it off with a Hog and Chick platter, which I order with two scrambled eggs and bacon or sausage. Other than the food, the best thing about the place is the fact you can fulfill your breakfast cravings until closing time at 2 p.m., unlike many fast-food chains where breakfast ends the moment the clock strikes 10:30 a.m.

Matt’s Big Breakfast isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel, but this consistently humming breakfast spot has perfected it. They serve plates like hearty scrambles, piled-high sandwiches, griddle cakes, and thick-cut bacon all day to a walk-in-only crowd that’s mostly made up of people who get up early to shop for produce at the Downtown Phoenix Farmers Market around the corner. If there’s one place you’re going to prioritize in the city for breakfast, this is it.
